The Evansville Fire Department became a fully paid, career department in 1888. EFD provides the Citizens of Evansville with Firefighters that are dedicated to protecting their families during fires, natural disasters and medical emergencies.
Members of our department are active in many civic projects including:
Survive-Alive House - Portable house on a trailer which is towed by a retired Rescue Squad (donated by the City) to area schools to help teach children how to survive a fire in their home. The house is manned by several of our Firefighters who put on most of the programs on their off-duty time. The house is the second one built by our own members. The present house has been built with improvements learned from the first house. Several hundred children are reached annually and benefit greatly from techniques taught in this program.
Muscular Dystrophy Telethon - Our Firefighters raise thousands of dollars annually through "Boot Day", golf scrambles, and donation canisters placed in local businesses.
Children's Christmas Party - 50 needy children are invited to our annual Christmas Party to enjoy an afternoon of fun, food, Santa Claus and gifts, which they would not otherwise have a chance to experience. All costs are covered by personal monetary donations of our Firefighters and a few of our civilian friends.
